Sebastian Merk
Working and living in Göttingen, Germany
Abstract Artist
Works mainly in Acrylics, Acrylic Inks, and tag-markers on canvas
Background:
Sebastian was born in Germany in 1996. Sebastian began working as an artist roughly 3 years ago. Over those years he has worked to develop his techniques as well as style. In the interim, Sebastian has also been studying science as well as coaching the sport of Parkour, or free running. It is perhaps his studies in science, he claims, that have triggered an interest in the opposing or contrasting type of work expressed within his own art. Sebastian explains that his art represents a free spirit and the imagination.
Sebastian has managed to stand out as the result of his captivating, colorful, and expressive abstract works. All of which have captivated collectors from England, France, Ireland, the US, and Hong Kong to name a few.
As far as the work itself, Sebastian loves to work with acrylic paints, acrylic inks, markers and sometimes even spray paint within his work. He claimed that it took some for him to create his unique style, when asked to what he believed seperated a good artist from a bad one he explained that in his opinion it was “endurance and hard work” that separated the good from the bad.
“It all takes time and success doesn’t happen over night (most of the time).
Sebastian likes to apply the colors to his canvas with a palette knife, a brush, and even his fingers. His colorful and bright work encapsulates the audience and works to spark the imagination of the viewer. He aims to create a place for the viewer where they can become lost in the details and linger for a moment.
“It’s almost as if another world is possible where you can forget your problems and everything that is around you to just focus in on its intensity.”
I asked Sebastian what his studio space was like and what he did when he felt stuck on a piece. Sebastian then explained that his studio space was quite messy. He likes to keep all of his materials around and readily available to him so when his creativity sparks he can just grab what he needs easily. When stuck on a piece he likes to set it aside and the ideas will come to him. He explained
“I let the canvas rest. I look at it every day and at some point I know what to do next.”
Sebastian has worked incredibly hard to get to where he is today. He has reached a large audience worldwide on his social media platforms including, instagram, where he has reached 23.3K followers to date and climbing.
When asked to explain a little more about what went into his work and daily life as an artist he explained that it was like running a business.
“As an artist you have to create, you have to paint a lot, but you also you have to work on everything from the marketing to the shipping. It is hard work and you don't get to spend the majority of your time with just your canvas, you have to do a lot of other work as well.”
To conclude our interview, I asked Sebastian what his favorite piece to date was and why?
My personal favorite is the artwork "A Better World" it is a large piece that is very expressive and has a lot of depth to it. It has many details and brightens up the room with positive emotions.
“A Better World”
