Andy Warhol (1928-1987)

Warhol was working at a time when Abstract expressionism was dominating the art world. Andy Warhol to date is one of the most recognizable American artists. His work is noteworthy for many reasons, one of which being his ability to link both commercial and fine art. Warhol wanted to be a radical artist. He was an artist working “in the age of mass media” and “consumer culture” and his work does a great job of expressing the cultural atmosphere during the 1960s. In addition, Warhol loved to experiment with non-conventional art making methods the most significant being his use of the silk screen. This in it of itself was revolutionary. Warhol had this undying appreciation for photography as well as the the idea of repetition associated. His selection of subjects becomes intentional and again a commentary of the cultural association within his respected artwork. For example his Marilyn Monroe portraits, which were created shorty after her death. The painting (photographed below) shows how he chose to depict her in both color and black and white. Additionally, he depicts her from great detail on the left to this incredibly blurred and erased imagery on the right.Perhaps the transition and translation within his representation of Marilyn insinuates that her untimely death might have been associated to fame and her public persona. Both of which were often said to have been responsible or tied to her untimely death.

You have to do stuff that average people don’t understand because those are the only good things.
